OPEN ONLY TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE FULL-TIME STUDENTS AND WHO OTHERWISE MEET THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

Note - the Finalist Teams of this Contest will be asked to travel to IDA Labs located at the National Design Centre, Singapore on 15 December 2014. At least one (1) member of your Team must be able to travel at that time. If no member of a Finalist Team is able to attend on this date, the Sponsor will select an alternative Finalist Team.


  1. Contest Description

    NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Red Hat Asia Pacific Pte Ltd ("Sponsor") is sponsoring the 2014 Red Hat Challenge@Labs ("Contest"), a skill contest in which participants compete to receive the Prize (defined below) by demonstrating their programming skill, cloud computing skill, and business acumen. The participants will need to deploy an application based on the Contest theme “Smart Living, Smart Homes,” pass the Red Hat Certified System Administrator Exam (EX200), and present a business proposal. The Contest begins on 1 July 2014 at 1.00am Singapore Time ("SGT") and ends on 15 December 2014 at 6.00pm SGT ("Term").

  2. Eligibility

    To be eligible to enter the Contest, you must be: (1) a full-time student currently attending a university, polytechnic institution or private school; (2) a legal resident of China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea or Thailand ("Eligible Countries"); and (3) above the age of majority in your country, province, and/or state of legal residence at the time of entry or at least twenty years of age in Taiwan (“Participant”). You must also have access to the Internet and a valid student email address to enter the Contest. You will also be required to provide the name of a lecturer contact from your school ("sponsor lecturer") so that Sponsor can obtain information about the school. Employees, officers, and directors of Red Hat, Inc., its subsidiaries and affiliated companies, Red Hat partners, distributors, system integrators and independent software vendors, and their immediate families and those living in their households are not eligible to enter. Government employees and contractors are not eligible to enter. You are not eligible to enter if you have ever been selected at any point in the past as a top three Red Hat Challenge Finalist.

    If you are entering as part of a company or on behalf of your employer, these rules are binding on you, individually, and/or your employer. If you are acting within the scope of your employment, as an employee, contractor, or agent of another party, you warrant that such party has full knowledge of your actions and has consented thereto, including your potential receipt of a Prize. You further warrant that your actions do not violate your employer's or company's policies and procedures.

  3. How to Enter

    To enter the Contest, visit https://www.redhatchallengeatlabs2014.com ("Website") and complete the registration form ("Entry") by 2 October 2014 at 11.59 p.m. SGT. You (“Contestant”) must provide all of the information requested on the registration form, including the following information for each member of your team: first and last name, name of school currently attending, e-mail address of student email account, date of birth, telephone number, student identification number, and the name and email address of sponsor lecturer. After you submit your Entry, you will receive a separate email with a login ID and password. You will need this ID and password in order to submit your Application during the Stage One of the Contest. Teams may consist of one, two, or three members.

    LIMIT ONE (1) ENTRY PER TEAM. EACH TEAM IS LIMITED TO A MAXIMUM OF THREE (3) PARTICIPANTS. Subsequent entries will be disqualified. All Entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged. Entries are void if they are in whole or part illegible, incomplete, damaged, altered, counterfeit, manipulated or obtained through fraud. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, or illegible entries or email, or for any computer related, online, telephonic, or technical malfunctions that may occur, regardless of whether or not such occurrences are within Sponsor's control.

  4. Privacy

    To enter, you must provide personal information in order for Red Hat to process your contest application. Your personal information will be transferred to servers located in the U.S. By registering for the Contest, you consent to the transfer of your personal information to servers in the U.S. Further, you agree to be bound by Sponsor's privacy policy located at :www.redhat.com/legal/privacy_statement.html and you understand that your personal information will be used in accordance with this policy.

  5. Sponsor

    Red Hat Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, located at 8 Shenton Way #10-00 Singapore 068811, is the sponsor of the Contest.

  6. Judging

    Judging will occur in three stages. Ten (10) Teams from each Eligible Country will be selected during Stage One (the "Semi-Finalist Teams"). Two (2) Semi-Finalist Teams from each Eligible Country will be selected during Stage Two (the “Finalist Teams”). One (1) Finalist Teams will be selected from among the fourteen (14) Finalist Teams during Stage Three to receive the Prize (the “Winning Team”).

    STAGE ONE

    Stage One of the Contest will take place between 14 July 2014 and 3 October 2014 (“Stage One”).

    1. Build and Develop and Application

      During Stage One each Team must build an application based on the Contest theme “Smart Living, Smart Homes” using OpenShift by Red Hat or Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (“Application”). The Application must be deployed to OpenShift Online.

    2. Submit the Application

      Login to the Website (using the ID and password you received after submitting your Entry) and submit the following:

      • Five (5) screenshots of your Application. These screenshots should highlight the functions of the Application or any other unique features.
      • A one line summary of your submission and a description of your creative concept and the Application. The description should describe how your Application captures the Contest theme “Smart Living, Smart Homes.”
      • Provide the URL of your Application hosted on OpenShift Online.

      Applications must be submitted before 3 October 2014 at 11:59pm SGT.

    3. Verification Period

      After submission, there will be one week of verification to ensure that the Applications meet the requirements listed above. The verification period will end on 10 October 2014. Qualified Applications will be made available for public voting. Red Hat reserves the right to reject any Applications it deems unfit.

    4. Public Voting

      Applications will posted to the Website and made available for public voting from 13 October 2014 to 19 October 2014. Following the public voting period, Applications will be ranked according to the number of votes received. The ten (10) Teams with the most votes in each country will be selected as Semi-Finalist Teams and will proceed to the Second Round. Ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from China, ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from Hong Kong, ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from Malaysia, ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from Singapore, ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from Taiwan, ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from South Korea, and ten (10) Semi-Finalist Teams will be selected from Thailand, for a total of 70 Semi-Finalist Teams overall.

    STAGE TWO

    Stage Two of the Contest will take place from 20 October 2014 and 31 October 2014 ("Stage Two"). During Stage Two, each member of each Semi-Finalist Team must take the Red Hat Certified System Administrator Exam (EX200) (“Exam”). There is no limit to the number of times a Participant may take the Exam during the 11-day Stage Two time period, but Sponsor will only cover Participants’s Exam fees for the first Exam attempt. Participants are personally responsible for paying the fees on any subsequent Exam attempts.

    A Team Exam Score will be calculated for each Team based on the average high Exam score of its members. If there are 3 Participants on a Team, the highest Exam score of each Participant will be added together, and then that total will be divided by 3 to determine the Team Exam Score. If there are 2 Participants on a Team, the highest Exam score of each Participant will be added together, and then that total will be divided by 2 to determine the Team Exam Score. If a Team consist of one individual, that Participant’s highest Exam score will constitute the Team Exam Score.

    The two (2) Semi-Finalist Teams from each Eligible Country who receive the highest Team Exam Scores during Stage Two will be selected to proceed to Stage Three, for a total of fourteen (14) Finalist Teams overall. In the event of a tie between two (2) or more Semi-Finalist Teams, the Semi-Finalist Team that received the most votes during the Stage One public voting period will advance to Stage Three as a potential Finalist Team. Each member of the Semi-Finalist Teams selected as potential Finalist Teams will be notified by e-mail that they have been selected as potential Finalist Teams in the Contest on or about 7 November 2014. Except where prohibited by law, each member of a potential Finalist Team may be asked to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility, Release of Liability and/or Publicity Release (“Affidavit”). If an Affidavit is provided to a member of a potential Finalist Team, the member of the potential Finalist Team must fully execute and return the Affidavit within five (5) days of attempted notification by Sponsor in order to proceed to Stage Three of the Contest. If the e-mail notification is ignored or returned as undeliverable, or the Sponsor does not timely receive the Affidavit when asked to provide it, the potential Finalist Team will be disqualified and an alternate potential Finalist Team will be selected based on the Stage Two evaluation criteria listed herein. At least one (1) member of each Finalist Team must be able to attend Stage Three. If no members of a potential Finalist Team can travel to Singapore for Stage Three, that potential Finalist Team will be disqualified and an alternate potential Finalist Team will be selected based on the Stage Two evaluation criteria listed herein.

    Sponsor will provide the Finalist Teams from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand with round-trip airfare to, and lodging and accommodations for two (2) days in, Singapore. Finalist Teams are responsible for all required travel documents, including Passports and/or Visa requirements. Finalist Teams are responsible for obtaining all forms of insurance including, but not limited to, travel insurance, and Finalist Teams acknowledge that Sponsor has no obligation to obtain or provide travel insurance or any other form of insurance.

    STAGE THREE

    Stage Three will take place on 15 December 2014 (“Stage Three”) at IDA Labs@National Design Centre in Singapore. The Finalist Teams will travel to Singapore for Stage Three where they will compete against other Finalist Teams ("Live Competition").

    During the Live Competition, Finalist Teams will be given 15 minutes to demonstrate and pitch their Applications and present a Business Proposal in front of a panel of judges. The Business Proposal should be in the form of an electronic presentation deck, and should include the following topics:

    1. Business Idea/Model
    2. Innovation and Unique Selling Proposition
    3. Goals and Opportunities for Business
    4. Simple Financial Data
    5. Keys to Success

    Finalist Teams will be evaluated by the judges based on the following criteria:

    • Application is successfully deployed during the Live Competition and demonstrates OpenShift or Red Hat OpenStack (40%)
    • Innovation & Creativity (30%)
    • Business model of the Application (20%)
    • Presentation/Pitching (10%)

    The Finalist Team that receives the highest score from the judges during the Live Competition will be deemed the Winning Team. In the event of a tie between two (2) or more Finalist Teams, the Finalist Team that received the most votes during the Stage One public voting period will be deemed the Winning Team.

  7. Prizes

    The Winning Team will receive $10,000 USD in cash, to be split among the members of the Winning Team ("Prize"). Each member of the Winning Team will also receive an internship opportunity with Red Hat in our Beijing, China office.

    No substitution, or assignment or transfer of the Prize is permitted, except by Sponsor for reason of unavailability, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. The Prize consists of only those items specifically listed above as part of the Prize. Prize is awarded without warranty of any kind from Sponsor, express or implied, without limitation, except where this would be contrary to federal, state, provincial, or local laws or regulations. Expenses not specifically stated above, together with the reporting and payment of all applicable taxes, fees, duties, and/or surcharges, if any, arising out of, or resulting from, acceptance or use of the Prize, are the sole responsibility of the Winner. Restrictions, conditions, and limitations apply.

    Internship requires a minimum 6-month commitment from Participant. Whether an internship opportunity is extended to an individual is contingent upon approval of that individual’s work visa, and is subject to the laws and any labor restrictions of the individual’s country of residence.

    Odds of winning depend on the number of qualifying Applications received and the skill of the Participants.

  8. Condition of Participation

    By entering the Contest, you agree to be bound by the terms of these Official Rules and you confirm that you meet all eligibility requirements listed herein. You agree that all federal, state, provincial and local laws and regulations apply. By registering for the Contest, you agree that these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Contest.

    Except where prohibited by law, the Winning Team’s acceptance of the Prize constitutes permission for the Sponsor and its agencies to use the Winning Team’s Entry, names and/or likenesses for advertising and promotional purposes, in any media now known or hereafter devised, without further notice, compensation, consideration, review, or consent, and without regard to moral rights.

    If, in its sole judgment, Sponsor determines at any stage of the Contest that there are an inadequate number of Contestants available to participate, Sponsor may discontinue or cancel the Contest and no Prize will be awarded.

    To the extent permitted by law, all Participants of the Contest agree to hold Sponsor, its respective directors, officers, employees and assigns harmless for any injury or damage caused or claimed to be caused by participation in the Contest and/or use or acceptance of the Prize. Sponsor is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Contest, or announcement of the Prize. If, in Sponsor's opinion, there is any suspected or actual evidence of electronic or non-electronic tampering with any portion of the Contest, or if technical difficulties compromise the integrity of the Contest, the Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage the content or operation of this Contest is unlawful and subject to legal action by Sponsor or its agents. You may be prohibited from participating in this Contest if Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reasonably believes that you have attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices, or have annoyed, abused, threatened, or harassed any other participants, Sponsor, or associated agencies. In the event a potential winner's employer has a policy that prohibits the awarding of a prize to an employee, the Prize will be forfeited.

  9. Release of Liability

    By participating, all Participants release Sponsor, its affiliates, parent, and subsidiary companies, its employees, agents and officers, advertising and promotion agencies, licensees, as well as all others associated with the development and execution of this Contest, from and against any and all liability with respect to or in any way arising from the Contest. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to Contest entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms.

  10. Governing Law

    This Contest is subject to all federal, state, provincial, and local laws. This Contest and Official Rules are governed and interpreted by the laws of Singapore, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
